ABOUT THE REGISTER
The Adoption Contact Register for Scotland is a tried and tested means for those separated by adoption to express a mutual wish to be in touch with one another. Registration is a considerate act that can benefit all parties concerned. It is also:
A route by which many questions can be answered and reassurances given.
A means by which important medical information may be obtained.
An option for making contact and agreeing how, when and where.
WHO CAN REGISTER?
Those aged 16 and over, whose birth and/or adoption took place in Scotland (an adopted person will need their original birth information to be able to complete the form).
Birth mothers, birth fathers and any other birth relatives, where the adopted person’s birth and/or adoption took place in Scotland.
Adoptive parents on behalf of a child under the age of 16, where the child’s birth and/or adoption took place in Scotland.
WHAT HAPPENS AFTER REGISTRATION?
After returning the completed form the information is entered and cross-referenced against all existing entries on the Register, and also against any future registration. If there is a match with someone connected to you who is also registered*, a member of Birthlink staff is available on request to act as a go-between to arrange a meeting or to exchange news.
Please be aware that when there is a match on the Register we are duty bound to inform both parties.
It is important that we are kept informed of any changes to your contact details, such as your name or address. This will help us if we need to contact you in the future.
*When a match occurs you will be asked for a contribution towards the costs of mediation and support.
N.B. Please be aware that the cost of registration is £20. Before completing registration you will be asked to make this payment online. Please do not tick the Gift Aid box as this is not a Donation. If you are unable to pay online, please indicate on the form your preferred alternative (we can also accept payments via post or telephone).
